Document Summary
Memories are surprisingly easy to fabricate: this ease of fabrication enables a process of memory corruption. As a society, we really that memory varies greatly: sometimes, memory is an accurate recollection, sometimes, memory is inaccurate, sometimes, memories are implanted within our ideas. Researchers have been able to induce people to recall" complicated events from their early lives which never actually happened. A fake disneyland commercial which features bugs bunny leads 1/3rd of watchers to recall meeting bugs bunny in an actual trip to disneyland. Elizabeth loftus & palmer conducted an experiment concerning memory contamination: participants were viewed a video of a car crash, two conditions were established; participants were then asked two questions: Leading question: how fast were the two cars going when they smashed into each other: it is determined that differing words (and thus different connotations) lead to people making differing speed estimates. Use of smashed" lead to an average speed estimate of 65. 7 km/h.
