Document Summary

Suppression and rumination (think obsessively with self, problems, etc. ) = not good strategies; can be good with anger etc. Egos use tools to deny anxiety/rationalize - dissociate from experience. Problem-focus coping (opposite = being overwhelmed; helpless) Can"t always change the situation (i. e. reading about weightlifting won"t help) I. e. marshmallow experiment - michel - those who waited knew how to distract themselves. Ability to intentionally distract yourself requires ability to step back and allocate attention (self-regulatory) - self awareness, self-control -> change focus. Cognitive reframing: change interpretation of experience -> alternatives. I. e. kids would look at marshmallows in different ways (imaginative) - frame around marshmallow. Frame stressful situation as challenge rather than freaking out -> do better. Cognitive distortion - polarized thinking (all good or all bad), over-internalize. Cognitive therapy: more mindful of thinking processes. Replace negative thoughts with positive - reframe/open up to multiple different interpretations.
