Psy100h1 - lecture 20 - approaches to therapy. Ability to go against mainstream, go against the normal is same as the ability to reframe and calm down. Usually we follow the power of the situation/context/path. Must learnt to mediate through the path between thought and action. People would eat more popcorn because they had a bigger bowl of popcorn despite the fact that the popcorn was stale. First, let"s recognize the suppression and rumination aren"t great strategies. Ability to push negative emotions away gets us through the day, since we don"t always act on those emotions. This ability can be overapplied (which occurs most of the time) Freud"s defense mechanism ego"s way of pushing negative emotions away. Ego uses tools unconsciously to deal with anxiety and negativity. Rumination : tendency to think obsessively about everything. Opposite of rumination = pushing things away. Problem-focused coping/primary coping ex. feeling helpless, overwhelmed, giving up knowing how to fix them.
