Ego has bunch of tools and strategies to influence yourself. Forms of suppression (pushing away) is a defense mechanism blends into rumination (the tendency to think about yourself/your problems/your life) and overtime you develop a negative self-esteem and a negative schema about themselves. Problem-focused coping: opposite of this is giving-up; if problem- focused coping is taken to far it can result in rumination. Hope form problem-focused coping is mostly a misguided hope. We could always try do something about the situation . Sometimes we can"t the situation (past regrets, chronic insecurity), or else problem-focused coping doesn"t really apply (daily hassles stressors)
