Document Summary
A woman was so busy she forget her baby was in the back seat of her car; it was a hot day and the baby died. It may seem impossible to forget something so important, but when the mind is already preoccupied and something out of the ordinary(i. e. baby in the backseat) happens, it"s easy to forget. It"s easy for us to miss(even v. obvious) things when they violate our expectations. E. g. if shown a drawing of an unusually large parking meter, we won"t notice the difference b/c our brain will automatically perceive it as regular-sized. Easy to miss things when they don"t match w expectations - context matters. It"s also often the 1st step towards remembering something. Retrieval phase: other phases are useless if info can"t be retrieved + used. If you"re not paying attention, it is difficult to be stored in long term memory e. g. what a quarter looks like.
