Psychology can bring together mindsets of close-minded people (cling to fixed belief systems) Social injustice issues (treated differently: implicitly disempowered by system if diff. from the norm (oppression) Non-dominant social categories: job prospects, living standards, stereotypes. Stereotypes can control us and can guide our thoughts/behaviour in ways we"re not aware of. Police came to quick conclusion- assumed he was going for gun. How thoughts, feelings and behaviour work together all reciprocal processes (affect each other in all directions- reinforce each other)- reciprocally linked: map onto stereotypical (beliefs), etc. Stereotype (specific info that associates characteristic with specific social category), prejudice (affective component), discrimination (how you act around those people) Experiment 2: e. g. prime elderly or neutral through sentence-unscrambling task. Elderly condition: old, grey, wise, bingo, florida, wrinkled, ancient, knits, etc: words in sentences that revolve around stereotypes of old, like the sweet experiment- never say word but think you remember it.
