Document Summary

Lecture 9 divided attention: schneider and shi rin 1977 gave participants one of two tasks, one has a target where they tell them a single digit number. They show them a frame of three or four numbers. Target is always a number and distractors are always letters. Trial 2 had a target as a letter instead. Now they are looking for a letter that they have been ignoring. Tasks can be automatic: argued that yes certain tasks can be automatic, but there are also certain tasks that are more di cult, that may never be truly automatic, some sort of processing. Tasks that are cogntively demanding may never become automatic, always requiring some form of controlled processing. Texting includes a whole other set of cognitive and motor skills. Front-seat driver: since they share the environment, they will pause the conversation as well. The failure to notice large changes between scenes that are otherwise easily detectable.
