Using preschool children, they show a scene with three mountains, each of which has a different perception in terms on height. What the child sees is that the biggest mountain is closest to him/her. Child is then asked to choose a picture which would show what a child can see. A 3 y. o. watches the experimenter put something under the couch of a scale model of a room. Then the child is taken to the actual room where children older than 2 manage to find the toy: a symbol just means that something just stands for something else, missed by appearances - conservation tasks.
