Unconditional positive regard: parents & significant others accept & love a person for who they are. Conditional positive regard: positive regard, love, praise & approval depend on child behaving in particular way. Ppl-pleasers, need approval from others (only time when they felt loved in childhood was when they didn"t misbehave) Child develops anxious/ambivalent or avoidant attachment styles. According to rogers, mental health issues develop when one"s self-image & ideal self are incongruent.
