Document Summary

Lecture 17 (lecture 15 slides cont"d / lecture 16 slides) Water budget & water resources / basic structure of aquatic ecosystems. Can see large areas where water shortage has become major issue. Questions/conflicts about who owns water especially where water is scarce. For example israel and jordan use a lot of water from river so very little trickling down to dead sea: dead sea shrinking and getting saltier. If israel and syria take out a lot of water, jordan will have less water. Nile river is longest river in the world. 2 parts to the nile: blue nile: feeds most of ethiopia, white nile: feeds most of sudan. Blue and white nile intersect at city of khartoum. If sudan and ethiopia decide to increase agriculture activities, will be less water for. Whoever has upper watershed gets more water. Dams built: aswan high dam built south of cairo, changes river flow. Most densely populated river (10% of world"s population lives here)
