Very wide reach, crosses class, racial and gender boundaries. Discourse (love-hate relationship), is it good or bad, what it shows/doesn"t show, how necessary is it, the cost. Part of problem: experts decide, one-sided form of consumption. 40% of time spent, more than sleep, school. Not new, but new forms of consumption. Martin luther king jr. wanted people to read the bible themselves. Bible one of first form of mass media, printing press spread it. Democratic government encouraged it, improved school systems. Rise of literacy, not relying on leaders. People with different ideas can spread their ideas to people who can read. Took power away from church and state, balanced the power. Social media has the ability to destabilize because everyone can present their idea that challenges the power structure.
