SOC388H1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Erving Goffman
Document Summary
Metaphors of understanding dramaturgy and the theatre. We can see a lot of social life that is very much like the theatre. We are enacting a certain identity that we would like to portray to others. We need this to convey who we are as this is not always evident to others. This is often misunderstood to mean that we"re being dishonest and always so calculated. Managing or editing how we present ourselves and the impressions that we project. To emphasize the line between honest and dishonest, is the word persona. Persona means a mask worn by others. Things that were mentioned last week, just like in theatre, that are many spaces that are not the front stage. There are spaces where we can put our guard down and relaxing the work we do when managing our impression to others. How we manage our interaction with others. How we manage particular social orders of others.
