Wealthy chinese men saw how china was being manipulated by the foreigners: how the chinese were buying foreign goods rather than local goods. This was making china a feudal weak society: so they wanted to set up factories, thought is countries economy is strong other problems will be solved. The fact that a eunuch is trying to get a wife is a sign that society is changing.
