Anatomy and Cell Biology 3309 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Stratified Squamous Epithelium, Parotid Duct, Parotid Gland
Document Summary
Overview - tongue, parotid gland, submandibular gland, sublingual gland. On surface of the tongue you have lingual papillae. On 3/4 of the papillae you have taste buds. Sublingual gland - sits underneath the tongue, has numerous ducts that drain saliva into bottom of mouth. Submandibular gland - underneath jaw - has duct that also drains saliva into bottom of mouth. Parotid gland - beside the ear - has parotid duct that drains saliva into mouth behind second upper molar. Describe the organization of the tongue - epithelium type, connective tissue, etc. Stratified squamous epithelium - both keratinized and non-keratinized (underside = non- keratinized; regions on dorsal side are keratinized) Then two layers of connective tissue: lamina propria (lct), and a layer of dict. Underneath the two ct layers is primarily skeletal muscle with fibres located in different directions. Allows tongue movement in various directions to permit articulation of distinct sounds. Circumvallate papilla - found at the back of the tongue.
