The name of a colour; such as red, blue, green. The value or brightness of a colour is based on the amount of light emanating from the colour. Saturation describes the strength of a colour with respect to its value or lightness. Therefore, a colours saturation is the degree to which it is different than grey at a given lightness. In practical terms, think of saturation as the equivalent grey scale value of a colour. Since we rarely see colour in isolation, the contrast of them when placed together will affect our sense of what we see. The real colours are not altered; only out perception of them.
