Document Summary
Language shapes culture and culture shapes language. Changing language shapes peoples views, society is changing all the time. Direct attention to certain aspects of experience and ownplay or ignore others. E. g. time as a commodity, illness as war, argument as war. Take language from one domain of experience and apply it to another domain. Domain of experience: an area of human experience from which people borrow meaning to apply to other areas. Metaphors can reinforce people"s beliefs, as well as their understandings of reality. Time as a commodity (as if time is a thing that you can give or waste) In madagascar, time was originally measured by rice cooking. So time isn"t the same in all cultures, there are different ways of thinking about time. Deep messages about how life should unfold that we share as a society and that express our values. Not only the progress within human history but the progress we"ve achieved in our life.
