Holism: cannot understand the whole by looking only at its component parts in isolation. Aim to give the whole picture of a given society/group/social process (e. g. traditional ethnographies: environment, subsistence, kinship, religion, etc) Places human practices in the sociocultural context that gives them meaning. Allows us to understand what might seem bizarre irrational and/or aberrant from an ethnocentric perspective. Ethnocentrism: a perspective on the world that takes one"s culture as the only valid or possible point of reference. Morality, the ideal family, etc, are culture-speci c. Must attempt to understand a cultural practice from an insider"s perspective. Note: this does not mean that anything goes but uniformed judgmental attitudes is not allowed. Ethnographic method: a research approach that includes participant observation as a way to gain an insider"s perspective . 2) how does the book vendors in streetwalk differ from the population o. lewis had in mind?
