Mutations in cilia structure (or transport mutations) can have embryonic consequences. Mutation where primary cilia loses the non-motile element. Primary cilia are stabilized by acetylated tubulin. Not found on mitotic cells aka not found in stem cells. Cilia in development is crucial for signalling events. Karyokinesis is the segregation and separation of the chromosome. Responsible for normal function of the cell. As you enter mitosis, those microtubules need to depolymerize. Centrosome duplicates because it has no job at this point. Centrosome duplicates and facilitates mitotic mt dynamics. Interphase mt half-life of about 5 minutes. Half-life drops to about 15 seconds during mitosis. Job of the mtoc is to constantly polymerize and depolymerize.
