Biology 2382B Lecture 1: Cell Bio Lecture Notes
Document Summary
Cell biology is an academic discipline that studies cells, the basic structural, functional and biological unit of all known organisms. Cell biologists look at all aspects of the cell: Cell orga n ell e s and me m b r a n e trafficking (how stuff mov e s arou n d cell) Cell cycle, division and de a t h (how cells die and whe n and why) Cell mov e m e n t. Cell signaling (receive signals from outside the cell and process internally) Genes can"t do anything without the cells! The cell will illicit or exert its function. Genes just have the information but the cell is the way that the genes can work. Understanding cell biology is important because we need to know what a normal cell is so that we can cure or fix an abnormal cell. Lay the foundation for the therapies that can cure diseases. Relevance is linked to many nobel prizes.
