Document Summary
Can tell from pigmentation that frog eggs are asymmetrical. External fertilization = male drops sperm and squeezes female to drop eggs. Get thousands of embryos that start dividing in same pattern. All embryos of same species follow same cleavage pattern ! As frog divides, get thousands of cells each containing different determinants. As cells start moving around, get even more inductive reactions. Different cells in different tissues have different cell adhesion molecules (cams) ie. cadherins, etc. Cams of same type bind to each other = thus cells of same type bind to each other. Take epidermal and neural cells from embryo and mix them. But then separate according to cell type due to cams. Cells of same type like to stick together because they have the same type of cams. Two cells with same type of cadherins stick together. Thus cadherin binding allows cell-cell communication by letting cell know it is surrounded by like cells.
