By studying this course we can better understand and interpret the origin and evolution of urbanization in the mediterranean which gives us a better appreciation and understanding of our own urban society. We care about the past because some of these ancient cities are still very important cities today: example: vienna was under ottoman empire. It was an important city even in mid 1st century a. d. The classical tradition is a term that means that we have in some way inherited pieces of classical world. The greeks invented the grid system like the one shown in the pic: the romans and greeks started using the gridded system in the 6th- 4th century b. c (confirm this: apartment buildings were first constructed by the romans, example: priene was a greek city who used the gridded system from the 4th century b. c. Because it takes time and money to build statues so as a result it is a sign of power.
