Document Summary

Some long term causes of the first world war: lack of appreciation for many of the cultural groups in europe. Especially of the leaders of germany, austria-hungary, russia, and france. Winnable wars were things that were taken into consideration each country thought that they were accomplished enough to win a war. Germany planned on having a brief war to accomplish more land and expand their growing empire. This sense of reserve had entirely disappeared by the early 20th century: con icts in the balkans between austria-hungary and russia, and the domestic weakness of both states. Ottoman power was receding as other balkan states asserted themselves. Austria-hungary was a rival to russia due to this gain in power. Austria-hungary was good at limiting the growth of their state, speci cally serbian expansion. Russia felt humiliated because of austria-hungary"s strength, and clearly it is not a smart decision to anger a military rival.
