Chapter 11 physical & cognitive development in adolescence. We usually give the most attention to reproductive changes, but major other changes occur in other systems also. New motor/cognitive skills are needed in adolescence the transitional period b/t childhood & adulthood. Puberty = term for the physical changes that culminate in sexual maturity. Endocrine glands = secrete hormones governing growth & other aspects of physical development. Pituitary gland = triggers other glands to release hormones (master gland) stimulate gonads. Gonadotrophic hormones = responsible for sex organ development. 1 sex characteristics = growth of the penis, testes, ovaries, uterus, vagina. 2 sex characteristics = breast development, changing voice pitch, beard growth, body hair growth. Some changes at puberty, mostly 2 girl sex characteristics. Prenatal male genital formation, triggers sequence of changes in 1 & 2 male sex characteristics. Pituitary gh, tsh, & activating hormones physical maturation rate; signals other glands to secrete hormones.
