Gender refers to the cultural diferences between femininity and masculinity, and is historically speciic (1) gender does not exist in a vacuum. Gender intersects with sexuality, class, race, ethnicity, generaion and other forms of social diference. Thus diferent versions of gender exist even within a given historical moment. Versions of gender are hierarchized; for example, some forms of masculinity are privileged over others (2) gender is a discourse, manifested in texts. These forms of discourse teach us how to behave.
