All neoplasms are composed of neoplastic cells and supporting stroma. Neoplasma are classified according to types of cells (tissue od origin) and nature of tumor (benign or malignant: benign tumors have suffix (cid:494)oma(cid:495) following tissue type, some named after architectural patterns and others by type. Examples: adenoma benign tumor that forms gland or originating from glands. Polyp elevated mucosal lesions (a descriptive term: malignant tumors also classified according to type of cells of origin, composed of mesenchymal cells are called sarcoma (sar = fleshy) and epithelial cells are called carcinoma. Examples: adenocarcinoma malignant epithelial tumor with glandular growth pattern. Squamous cell carcinoma malignant epithelial tumor with recognizable squamous cells. Tumors may show divergent differentiation called mixed tumors, can either be benign or malignant. Teratoma consists of two or more germ layers arising from mesenchymal cells, ovary and testis, could be benign or malignant. Choristoma ectopic rest; a mass of histologically normal tissue in an abnormal location.
