The treatment of addiction can be viewed as having two phases. Individual cease use of drug (gradually or abruptly) Palliative care provided to reduce the withdrawal symptoms. Established addiction is a life-long chronic condition. Therapy is pharmacological and behavioural (cognitive behavioural therapists) Sometime is altered in the brain that makes people what to seek out the drug again even though the physical aspects of withdrawal are gone. Addiction in pharmacological terms involves the following states: Need for repeated administration to prevent some sort of (usually) adverse effect. Manifestation of adaptive effects that have occured due to repeated drug use. One depends on it for normal function. By definition are those which produce any of these effect through their ability to reinforce their use. Socio-economic issues are often a large factor in rehabilitation. As a person changes from abuser to dependent there is a concomitant decline. Usually in social, occupational, family, medical and legal status.
