Drug use diminishes more rapidly than heavy drinking. Reuptake leaving nt in synapse for quick transmission. Brain attempts to adjust body imbalances as a compensatory responses to maintain homeostasis. Body becomes used to the same environment where if you stop the drugs the compensatory response will still act. Body needs to tolerate even more if dose is increased. When in unfamiliar environment the body will not trigger the compensatory response and a large enough dose that was previously thought to be okay could be fatal.
