2021 addictive behaviors chapter 4 lecture 2 september 20th. Difference between dependence and addiction and abusing. Dependence is a bodily response (ie having knee surgery and you need to take your pain killers) Addiction- very difficult because of a lack of control. Substance use- use of a drug that induces physiological, psychological and/or behavioral changes. Substance use disorder- maladaptive change in behavior resulting from drug use. User perceives a need for the substance to avoid unpleasant feelings, monopolization, loss of control, social changes. Usually requires larger dose to attain desired affects. Substance withdrawal- physiologic, psychological and or behavioral changes that result from cessation of drug use. Behavioral definition of addiction: the 3 c"s. Set- psychological/ emotional frame of mind when using drugs. Setting- physical, social and interpersonal environment of drug use. Where they use a standard dose- the location where they used has an effect on the high.
