Human capital theorist: there is one single labour market. Emphasis: demand side of the economy, structure of the economy. Internal labour markets (job ladders: firm internal labour markets. Room for hierarchical progression within the company. Making progress within a firm: occupational internal labour markets. Progresses within a labour market in a firm. Entry into the primary labour market is often restricted: proper credentials, higher ses, people with social networks. People also face barriers exiting out of the secondary labour market: history of marginal employment, geography, employer discrimination. Employment by industry: health and social services. Workers by occupation: 25% works in some form of sales and service occupation. Police / firefighters: 18% working in business finance and administrations. Private vs. public self employed: men vs. women. 66% of can pop is working in the private sector. Non standard category of job: gender.
