Social interaction: the process by which people act and react in relation to others. Face-to-face communication and social interaction in general create the world in which we live. Rely on social structure to make sense of everyday situations and frame their lives. Status is part of social identity and helps define our relationships to others. Georg simmel: before we can deal with anyone, we need to know who the person is. Status set: all of the statuses that a person holds at a given time. Ascribed status: social position that someone receives at birth or assumes involuntarily later in life. Achieved status: social position that someone assumes voluntarily and that reflects personal ability and effort. Involve some combination of ascription and achievement. Master status: status that has e(cid:454)(cid:272)eptio(cid:374)al i(cid:373)porta(cid:374)(cid:272)e for so(cid:272)ial ide(cid:374)tit(cid:455), ofte(cid:374) shapi(cid:374)g a perso(cid:374)(cid:859)s e(cid:374)tire life.
