Sociology 1027A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Krahn People, Knowledge Economy, Cultural Capital
Document Summary
Socialization: a form of intellectual currency, babysitting function. Sorting and selecting: canada has the highest postsecondary achievement rate (64%), which suggests that canada is well-positioned to be a knowledge economy. Socialize kids to become responsible adults: create a national identity, every child is guaranteed schooling until grade 12 in canada. Latent (unintended) functions: developed youth culture, keeps kids off the streets, regulates the labor markets. Selection based on merit and aspirations: everyone can learn to the best of their abilities, this is functionalist because it is assumed we stream students by fair assessments. Conflict view on streaming/tracking: problems with stream placement arise in class and race. Low ses/minorities are being placed in applied streams: the further streaming is delayed, the fairer the process is, children placed in lower streams tend to fall behind have lower aspirations. Differences in stream placements: randomly selected children were high/low achievement, this led to labelling, the high did better than the low.
