Differing opinions: solution or problem i. e. , euthanasia and affirmative action. Social problems: are conditions affecting the quality of life or cherished values. Are patterns of behaviour warranting public concern and collective action. 4 conditions: (must be met to be considered a social problem) Involve a gap between social ideals and social reality. Involve significant proportion of population; must have national attention. How social problems get elevated quickly to a social problem: People affected by a condition are influential or powerful. There is a rapid increase in number of people affected. Perspectives that focus on group behaviour, culture; what goes on in society that contributes to social problems in society that contributes to social problems. Interested in reaching equilibrium/status quo among social institutions. Changes within one institution affects all other institutions. Functions of each institution; need to be done in order for institutions to operate. Strengthen social norms and slow pace of change.
