Document Summary

Ancient rome had the very first forms of advertising, using sign writing. The question is whether the images displayed on the sides of bars and shops were meant to get people to buy the product or whether they were simply decorative and representative of the products available. The house of julia felix: still life fresco from a large villa in pompeii. Case study ostia and the square of the corporations. The square of corporations had floor mosaics referring to the shops/corporations, shippers and traders. The mosaics would depict where the traders were coming from and what goods they were providing (the symbols functioned as a form of advertising) Design: important to think about how the ad can be recognizable as a form of promotion but distinguishable from other similar forms. The frames of reference of how the mosaics were understood is also interesting to think about.
