The idea of commerce is very old indeed: for the first thousand years, people used advertising to promote two things, 1) locations and, 2) services. (ex. If you had a religious assembly, they would draw symbols into rocks forming a path along where ppl would travel leading to it. Exam question: what was the most common form of advertising throughout. Not common anymore but has been in history. Oral media continues to be the dominant form of advertising.
