Reactive measurement occurs when subject knows/suspects their behaviour is under scrutiny: the behaviour of the subject is in reaction to the observer"s presence and hence may be modified and distorted from the natural response. Non-reactive measurement observations obtained without the study participants awareness. Research in which data collection does not involve direct elicitation from or interaction with the study participants. Types: comparative & historical research, content analysis, naturalistic observations (non-participant observation, secondary data analysis. Common methodological characteristics: use more than one case" to address a substantive problem, emphasized the connectedness of various geographically defined units of analysis, try to understand a social phenomenon from various historical points (connecting past to present) Topics appropriate to this method: tracing the development of social policies over time, comparing historical events (e. g. , women"s movements) phenomenon policies across countries. Appraises the authenticity & authorship of the data source verify facts and details.
