Sociology 2206A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Canadian Medical Association, Group Dynamics, Precoding
Document Summary
Most common independent variables: income, age, occupation, personal behavior, etc. Problems include limited knowledge, bias, memory: spouse"s income, child activities, sister"s personal relationships, etc. Factual questions about an entity or event. Witnesses are not researchers which is a problem: accounts of a political demonstration or riot (how many people are there, what characteristics, what response, etc. , not specifically looking for those details but it"s the same problem as above. Very common variable: both cause &/or effect. Heavy use of likert scales: to what extent do you disagree or agree with the following statements. Less common in sociology: how many census metropolitan areas exist in canada. Helps you choose what to include: stay away from irrelevant questions & include all the important ones. Make sure the question is going to tell you what you actually want to know. Put yourself in the position of the respondent.
