Mechanical solidarity cannot withstand the pressures of increasing population density and migration: refer to paper he gave out. Why do they stay together: when they look at each other, they see someone who shares a collective conscious, share the same view of the world. Migration leads to his ^ disappearing: probability of experiencing difference increases. Moving to organic: integration and regulation are changing. Mechanical: solidarity due to high integration, low regulation. For durkheim, we are not quite at organic yet. Writes book three, he wants us to finally be there, to get rid of the problems that are disallowing us to be there. The problem: individual: any segment of society that isn"t constrained by common value system, something that isn"t part of solidarity. The collective consciousness is weak, individual is too strong: problem. Solution: bring back the collective: we have to balance it with the individual. Source of common values previously: religion, ethnicity: no longer possible, these are now diverse.
