The word nurse and nourish come from the same latin root word. Wet nurses were hired to breastfeed the children of richer women. In eastern european languages, the word for nurse means sister. Hospitals used to be places that people would go if they had no one to take care of them. Nursing became an occupation in the 19th century. Her parents were wealthy and she was well educated by her father. She believed that god called her to spend her life in service to others & decided to become a nurse, which wasn"t considered to be a wealthy job at that time. She went to a nursing school and trained as a nurse. Because of her, mortality went from 40%+ to less than 2% She believed that nurses must provide conditions that are optimal for the body and nature to work together for healing. She was able to show the importance of hygiene and clean conditions.
