Sentencing has gotten harsher - we are becoming more punitive: 39% rise in custodial sentences, longer sentences, though crime rate is dropping in uk since 1997. The media - the headlines hook people, need to be exciting. Newspapers need to do what will sell. There is not a lot of violent crime: this is just what the media reports.
