Pre-industrial agricultural societies experienced famines, plagues, droughts, floods. People (cid:373)ade se(cid:374)se of these through refere(cid:374)(cid:272)e to (cid:862)fate(cid:863) or super(cid:374)atural for(cid:272)es. People were focused on the past (customs) and present (understanding dangers using interpretations from the past), but were not future-oriented: external threats: dangers experienced as something that comes from outside human influence. Origins of threats: some combination of gods and nature.
