Lecture 12 gender double standards and sexual empowerment. A headmistress was concerned that high school girls regard kim kardashian & taylor swift as role models. Shakespeare"s characters are hard to relate to, whereas today there is a difference in historical contexts. Many of his female characters can be critiqued (i. e. all of juliet"s decisions are based on her relationship to romeo and her family) There is a dichotomy; bad girls who display their sexuality, and good girls in the victorian era where women were proper. There is a double edge sword, where girls should either be one or the other, while there is no room for diversity. Childhood innocence and the new norm of sexualization. Pop culture representations increasingly present younger girls as sexual beings. There is an assumption that girls will grow up to be heterosexual and their sexuality is meant to appeal to men.
