Document Summary

Molecular signals received by cells that have receptors tuned to. When signal molecules binds receptors cellular response: changes in gene expression protein synthesis, transport of molecules across pm, metabolic reaction, secretion, movements, cell division, apoptosis (programmed cell death) Cells communicate with one another through: direct channels of communication. Gap junctions (animal cells) spread of electrical signals between cells in the cardiac muscle. Plasmodesmata (plant cells: specific contact between cells. Cell adhesion molecules- integral membrane proteins that bind cells to one another or to extracellular matrix: intracellular chemical messengers. Surface receptors: integral membrane proteins glycoproteins. Binding of a signaling molecule: specific fit, just like an enzyme binding substrate, induces molecular change in the receptor that activates its cytoplasmic end. Responses occur over a longer time: steroid hormones. Steroid hormones can pass through lipid bilayer. Hormones bind to its receptor within cytoplasm. Hormone-receptor complex can enter nucleus and influence gene expression. Response: signal transduction molecule initiates signaling cascade.
