We make communication choices based on an insufficient knowledge base: most of our habits come from: friends ,family and popular culture, very biased, biased nature of info will effect performance. Saying that the other person is probably busy so you end the conversation: a us poll showed that 66% felt comfortable communicating. Females more than males; old more than young: comfort level and communication, communication apprehension. It"s possible to be comfortable in one setting but not in another: some struggle listening to some messages but not others. Understanding ic: complex and fluid process, different situations/different people/same person but different situation etc. etc, one on one vs. many. Interpersonal: small group communication, organizational communication, mass communication, public communication. The linear model of communication: shannon & weaver (1949) Information transmission as a linear process: sender; receiver; channel; noise, context, physical, cultural, social/emotional, historical. If we don"t consider context in our interactions with others, we have no way to judge our interpersonal effectiveness.
