Document Summary

Protagoras: human beings were the measure of the world, explanations should not come from outside the human mind, we look to ourselves to explain that which surrounds us. Power to think and reason, something that fundamentally defines a human being. Thinking is very closely linked with problem solving with the use of reason. Greeks tell us animals can only act instinctively, whereas human beings can think their way out of the problem using reason and the power of thinking that is unique to us. Suggests that humanity have a sense of purpose because we have the ability to think about ourselves. Once thinking and reason and all the following are practiced, we end up with a very clear notion of perfection which is what the greeks call beauty. Ideal perfected version of ourselves, better of perfected from where we are today in the future. We are not static creatures, we have the ability to change ourselves.
