A professional is much more skilled than an amateur athlete, as their skills are low in supply and high in demand. These athletes possess a great deal of determination, drive, and commitment to their training and betterment of their athleticism. The world"s oldest profession in my eyes would be being a caregiver. Being a pro athlete is a matter of getting paid. At one time ie also meant that one was disqualified from participating in the olympics, which were for amateur athletes. There was a lot of hypocrisy with some athletes (especially from communist countries) being subsidized to devote their lives to winning medals and yet still being counted as amateurs. The world"s oldest profession is a term for prostitution. Its practitioners are also pros only in the sense that they get paid to do something most people do for fun.
