Pressures on politicians need to manage image, media coverage essentials, digital media. Horse race campaigns emphasis shifts from policy to polls making politics appear to be shallow and campaigns are now effectively permanent. The permanent campaign more the case in us, now election dates are fixed here too, always raising money for campaigns, always worrying about coverage. Character issues coverage focussing on personality of politicians, scandals always big news, might lead public to withdraw (social media changes this) Party discipline important to control message which means controlling party members, campaigns are centrally planned and broadcasted on national media sources. Campaign events always about visuals (settings, flag, appearance) Negative campaigning campaign focus on opponents giving voters a reason to vote against them, make themselves look better, and leads to voter disengagement. Negative partisanship partisan identifications weakening but voters know who they don"t like.
