- Households receive income and use it to pay taxes to the
government to consume goods and services and to save through the
financial markets
- Firms receive revenue from the sale of goods and services and use it
to pay for the factors of production
- Both households and firms buy investment goods such as housing
and factories
- The government receives revenue from taxes, uses it to pay for
government purchases
- Any excess of tax revenue over govt spending is called public
saving which can either be positive (budget surplus) or negative
(budget deficit)
What determines the total production of goods and services?
- Economyā€™s output of goods and services (GDP) depends on (1)
quantity of inputs, called factors of production and (2) ability to turn
inputs into outputs

- Inputs used to produce goods and services
- Two most important factors are capital and labour
- Capital is the set of tools that workers use and labour is the time
spent working
- Physical and knowledge capital
