The purpose of this topic in the course is to help you think about the potential of words, and how they acquire meaning. It will also establish a basic terminology for discussing writing style issues concerning word use. The problem with words, and their tremendous potential, is that they can mean" so many things at once. They are appropriate to use in some contexts and not in others. They carry several meanings not all of which are relevant in the given text. They evoke associations in the minds of readers which can be more or less in keeping with the text"s message. In other words," in order to check that their meanings come together in an appropriate way in a given text, we need to understand how words mean, and how they are used. This kind of reflection comes under the category of diction.
