Lynching: to put death, especially by hanging, by mob action and without legal authority. 1846: donnelly family arrives in ontario, part of widespread irish famine migration the potato famine, that"s what ireland thrived on, everything was a disaster, 1 million died of hunger. Squatters (didn"t own the land, basically stealing it bc they didn"t know who owned it couldn"t vote bc they were just kind of living on it) on empty farm land. Donnellys are catholic, avoid lock catholic irish feuds. Donnelly 100 acres farm sold to legit buyer (pat farrell) Standard pay off to squatters a normal thing in 1850"s ontario, leads to bad-blood. Went to court and they said they can have 25 but farrell wasn"t happy. 1857: farrell fights james donnely at barn raising bee (communal labour), farrell dies and donelly sentences to 7 years in kingston pen for manslaughter.
