The importance of being aware of frames of reference: Like a picture frame, they create a focus of interest. They create an implicit boundary around what we see and experience. They lead us to see and emphasize certain features in the world around us and to ignore others. They encourage us to put a particular spin or interpretation on the situations in which we are engaged. It is important to understand that a single frame of reference, like one tool in a toolkit, can create problems: They lead us to interpret every situation in the same old way. They limit how we think and how we can act. They create biases and blind spots that can detach us from important dimensions of the realities with which we have to deal.
